Interplay between proton ordering and ferroelectric polarization in H-bonded KDP-type crystals
نویسنده
چکیده
The origin of ferroelectricity in KH2PO4 (KDP) is studied by first-principles electronic structure calculations. In the low-temperature phase, the collective off-center ordering of the protons is accompanied by an electronic charge delocalization from the near and localization at the far oxygen within the O-H· · ·O bonds. Electrostatic forces, then, push the K+ ions towards off-center positions, and induce a macroscopic polarization. The analysis of the correlation between different geometrical and electronic quantities, in connection with experimental data, supports the idea that the role of tunnelling in isotopic effects is irrelevant. Instead, geometrical quantum effects appear to play a central role.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the soft mode for hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics
Numerical simulations of dipole dynamics have been studied by employing a recently proposed modified strong dipole proton coupling ~MSDPC! model of the phase transition in the hydrogen-bonded type of ferroelectrics. The obtained results in the form of the spectral density of the polarization fluctuation along the polar axis and along the lateral direction are simulated and correlated with known...
متن کاملUltrasonic Studies of Ferroelectric Phase Transition in Gly-H3P03 Crystals
Crystals of glycine phosphite G l y H 3 P 0 3 (abbreviated as GPI ) belong to the low-symmetry representatives of hydrogen-bonded crystals. At room temperature the unit cell of this compound is monoclinic (space group P21 /a) and contains four formula units [1]. The crystal structure is characterised by the presence of infinite chains of hydrogen-bonded phosphite anions that are directed along ...
متن کاملThermally activated proton hopping in lawsonite, the ferroelectric transition at 125 K, and the co-elastic phase transition at 270 K.
Lawsonite, CaAl(2)Si(2)O(7)(OH)(2)H(2)O, is a novel ferroelectric material which is dominated by ordering and disordering of protons. We report related elastic anomalies in lawsonite. A new approach to extracting acoustic data from resonant ultrasonic spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the ordering and disordering of protons. This approach is based on analysis of entire spectra, rathe...
متن کاملRaman Spectra of Soft Modes in Ferroelectric Crystals
The interpretation of Raman spectra of soft modes in ferroelectric crystals is not easy because of its over-damped line shape and the complicated temperature dependence near the transition temperature. There exist not a few cases which are difficult to determine the transition type is either order-disorder or displacive type. The main purpose of this paper is to point out the characteristics of...
متن کاملModel for Paramagnetic Probe in Hydrogen Bonded Ferroelectric
The modified strong dipole-proton coupling model and Monte Carlo calculation are employed to describe paramagnetic defect in hydrogen bonded ferroelectric. In this model, probe is treated as “soft” dipole impurity in the system with N = 108 dipoles. The effective double-well type potential of the probe is obtained and its temperature dependence in the paraelectric phase is studied. It is shown ...
